National Do Not Call Registry |
Georgia residential consumers who want to
reduce the number of unwanted telemarketing calls from telephone solicitors
trying to get you to purchase, rent, or invest in, property, goods,
or services are encouraged to register with the FREE "National Do Not Call
Registry."
Beginning November 1, 2003, consumers may be
placed on the "Georgia No Call List" free of charge simply by registering their
phone numbers with the National Registry. You may register with the
national registry online at www.donotcall.gov
or by calling toll-free, 1-888-382-1222, for TTY call 1-866-290-4236 from the
number you wish to register.
While being on the list may significantly
reduce the number of unwanted calls you receive, it does not prevent you from
receiving calls from:
- Businesses that have a previous or current relationship with you.
An established relationship exists if you have purchased, leased or rented
goods or services from the company within 18 months preceding the call, or
if you have submitted an application or made an inquiry to the company
within the 3 months preceding the call.
- Recognized charitable or religious organizations; or
- Political pollsters or candidates for public office.
The Governor's Office of Consumer Affairs is
responsible for enforcing the Georgia No Call List, not the Public Service
Commission or your local telephone company. To report a violation or for
additional information, you can call the Governor's Office of Consumer Affairs
at 404-657-7544, or toll-free at 1-800-805-7544. Before calling the
Governor's Office of Consumer Affairs, please try to identify the telephone
solicitor by obtaining either the name of the company or the phone number from
which the call was made. (NOTE: You will want to retain the date of
registration for you personal records.)
Federal law requires telemarketers to search
the registry every three months and synchronize their call lists with the phone
numbers that are on the registry. If you receive telemarketing calls after
you have registered your telephone number and it has been in the registry for
three months, you can file a complaint at
www.donotcall.gov or by calling 1-888-382-1222, TTY 1-866-290-4236.
You will have to have the company's name or phone number to file a "Do Not Call"
complaint.
